The Brannan Cottage Inn Story

Sam Brannan became one of the first millionaires in California. He came by boat from New York to Yerba Buena, later renamed San Francisco. He was into everything that would make money. When gold was discovered, he found his "gold" by selling supplies to the miners. As his wealth grew he looked for more opportunities. Sam had heard about the hot springs north of Napa where wealthy people went for their health benefits. He made his way to the hot springs and by 1850 was extolling his dream of creating a "Saratoga of California".

Sam Brannan not only developed Calistoga, California but is credited with naming the town. In an attempt to say "the Saratoga of California," after a few drinks, he uttered "Calistoga of Sarafornia".

San Brannan's resort opened in Calistoga in 1859 with an up-scale hotel and 25 cottages; each with five rooms. Each cottage had a wide porch with scalloped trim along the eaves.
